Review of El Parnaso Hyspano 28th February, by Stephen Goodridge
I always enjoy the BMEMF events so try to attend when I can although almost missed this one. I must admit when I saw the scores in Quechua and other Latin American indigenous languages I was a bit concerned. However, I needn’t have worried. The warmup consisted of dancing in a nod to how music is perceived in Latin America. Not something we British are comfortable with. Rafael then proceeded to explain how music is seen by the indigenous people which was excellent background to performing the songs. When he said we would do some dancing and singing outside at the end I was a little sceptical.
But it was a lovely day, it was a great workshop and completely not what I expected. We finished with singing in procession outside, around the cello and recorders players, with the Abbey bells ringing, the birds singing and the sun shining low through the trees. It was really magical. Many thanks to John Sloboda and Rafael Montero and BMEMF for giving us the opportunity to experience a whole different approach to classical singing.
