Saturday 24th February

The wide celebrations of William Byrd in 2023 should not be allowed to overshadow his contemporary, Thomas Weelkes, another fine, and almost certainly more fun, composer!  Stories abound as to his behaviour, and his music has some quite extraordinary texts and backgrounds. Our workshop will combine plenty of singing (led by Will Dawes) with historical background and context (led by Dr Katie Bank).  The music will include Weelkes’ most notable pieces, including When David Heard, Death hath Deprived Me, and the intriguingly titled Thule, the Period of Cosmography.

Saturday 13th April
Julia Bishop Workshop for Orchestral String Players.
Tutors: Julia Bishop
Venue:
Stoke Bliss & Kyre Village Hall, Nr. Tenbury Wells, WR15 8RS

Saturday 25th November.   Messa La Luna Piena
On 25 November, at the Great Barn, Hellens Manor, tutor George Parris led us expertly through Giuseppe da Celano's Messa La Luna Piena.  It was quite possibly the work's first performance in England, and almost certainly the first time that BMEMF has assembled such a variety of instruments, from contrabass recorder to theorbo, via cornetts, lysards, viols and many more.  George had prepared the instrumental parts himself, and our players produced a wonderful sound, blending admirably with the two choirs of voices.
